On challenges

It is often said that art, at its best, challenges the viewer. When it comes to visual art, I am an amateur. But as a musician, I can say that art should and does very often challenge the artist as well.

I am an engineer by training. So in this project, when faced with engineering challenges, I feel more or less comfortable, or at least passably competent, taking on those engineering challenges. But this project is turning out to be quite multidisciplinary, and there are definitely aspects that will require me to buck up and stretch myself.

Fabrication of the straps that I will use to hold the wiring harness on my body is proving to be one of those areas that is outside my comfort zone. Today I bought yards of elastic, and a small battery-operated sewing machine. I’ve never used a sewing machine in my life. This should be interesting.

One thing I’m pleased to report is that you can seal the ends of a strip of elastic with a flame – this stuff is 62% polyester.
